Hypertrophy, pronounced [hahy-pur-truh-fee], is used both as a verb and a noun for muscle mass increase or growth. Muscles get bigger or hypertrophy in many ways.

Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy

Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy is an increase in muscle size due to swelling up of cells and fluid retention within the cell. With the help of supplement such as Creatine, bodybuilders can achieve sarcoplasmic hypertrophy by forceing water into muscle cells

Myofibrillar Hypertrophy

Myofibrillar Hypertrophy is the increase in contractile protein in muscle cells known as myofibrils. This process is not easy as sarcoplasmic hypertrophy. Heavy weight lifting with low repetitions stimulate myofibrillar hypertrophy and increase strength – not necessarily mass.
