Pivoting & Waltzing
August 12th, 2010 | Posted by in Boxing TechniquesThese two footwork techniques are used when an opponent is coming to you. A pivot is stepping back with your rear foot in a wide sweep toward your outside while pivoting smoothly on the ball of your leading foot.
Practice the following drills with your training partner:
- He rushes in – you pivot and cross head
- He rushes in – you pivot and throw a lead hook to the head
- He rushed in – you pivot, throw a cross to the head, hook to the head and another cross to the head
As for waltzing an opponent, it’s a movement made famous by the heavyweight Georges Carpentier. The waltz is basically a pivot combined with a side step to the outside
Feint the lead hand and retreat drawing your opponent to come to you and as soon he step in , step to your outside on your lead foot and then pivot on the ball of that foot to follow with any appropriate combination.
