Hinge Principle

Punching is not just an arm exercise.

Power comes from body mechanics.

When throwing punches, you should observe two basic principles: hinge principle and the physics of power. The hinge principle requires you to imagine that your upper body is a door with the ball of your lead foot as the hinge. With every punch you throw, you imagine you are slamming the door while pivoting sharply on your lead foot.

  • When throwing the jab, you should slam the door toward the inside of your body
  • When throwing the cross or rear straight, you slam the door toward the outside of your body
  • When throwing the lead hook, you will slam the door to the inside
  • When throwing the rear hook, you slam the door to the outside of your body

The hinge principle utilizes your entire body mass. Most people punch with arms and shoulder. With the hinge principle you can put all your body weight behind your punches.
