June 6th, 2010 | Posted by in 4 Vegetables & SaladsRocket is a member of the Brassica family that grows wild across much of Europe. It’s closely related to the mustard plant. It is a small plant with elongated, serrated leaves. Much of the rocket we buy is cultivated, but wild rocket leaves contains more of the protective plant chemicals than the cultivated hybrids.
The leaves are rich in in carotenes and are excellent source of lutein for eye health. The indoles found in rocket and other Brassicas are linked with protection from colon cancer. The leaves supply good amount of folate and calcium for healthy bones and heart.
The deeper colour the leaves, the more carotenes they contain.
