It is the a major source of dietary lycopene, a carotene antioxidant that fights heart disease and may prevent prostate cancer. Tomatoes also have an anticoagulant effect because of the salicylates the contain. They also contain other antioxidant including vitamin C, quercetin and lutein.
No matter how you eat them, they are a great source of lycopene, which helps reduce the onset of various cancers, including prostate. Ketchup sauce contain even more amounts of lycopene than fresh tomatoes.
Tomatoes are low in calories but high in potassium and contain useful amount of fibre.
One medium tomato contains nearly a quarter of the day’s recommended intake of vitamin C for adults
The more red and ripe the tomato is, the more its content of lycopene.
