A melon contains over 92%  of water, which can help keep  the kidney working well. The orange varieties  are a good source of beta-carotene and are  also high in vitamin C. All melons are rich in vitamin B6 and potassium and several varieties are high in the bioflavonoid group  of plant chemicals, which have anticancer, anti-heart disease and anti-ageing properties.

Melons are also rich in soluble fibre, while watermelon  is a good source of lycopene which helps  protect against prostate cancer.

Melons have high potassium content that helps prevent fluid retention and balances sodium in the body.

Watermelons contain citrulline, an amino acid that aids blood flow  to muscles ,  helpful for exercise and sports.

An average-sized cantaloupe  melon contains

  • 28 kcalories
  • 1 g protein
  • 6.3 g carbohydrate
  • 1.5  g fibre
  • 39 mg vitamin C
  • 315 mg potassium
  • 2647 mcg beta-carotene
